"Suicide Shop" is a 2012 french animated musical based on the book by the same title. It shows life in a big city filled with sad, depressed people who seemingly can think of nothing but suicide. Everyone is so desentized that strangers give each other tips on taking ones life, and all the police cares about is giving tickets to those who break the law by killing themselves on a public street.
The story follows Tuvaches, a family of four who run the shop with articles used for suicide, ranging from poisons, ropes, to blades and more unusual items. However, their latest offspring is a happy, optimistic boy capable of smiling, laughter and being genuinely nice. He's an anomaly in this world and even more so in his family, and the story shows how he deals with his surroundings and how his family deals with such an unusual occurrence.
This entire convention is sort of like bizarro Adams' family. Instead of having a group of joyously sadistic and masochistic psychos, Tuvaches are as depressed as everyone around them, but deny themselves the sweet release due to strong conviction that they must serve people by helping them cross to the other side.
While the movie is technically a comedy, I didn't find myself laughing all that much. The most interesting thing was the entire concept of the world and seeing how a little boy tries to change it. Quite frankly it's nothing impressive in any aspect - visual, audio, story. The drawings were nice, but animation was kept very basic. Overall the movie was short didn't overshoot the ambitions. Probably the weakest part was the ending and I was not suprised learning that it differed from the original.
Overall, if you want to see a short animated movie in a unique setting then this one's for you.
